Take a short personality quiz to see if you have the right personality to run a daycare. You should be strongly agreeing and/or advocating most of the following statements:

  1. As a day caregiver you will be spending a lot of time nurturing and caring for children. The first and most important trait is that you must possess is a love for children.
  2. You need to possess great patience, not only towards the children but their parents as well. You understand that it will take time to reassure the parents to trust you completely with their children.
  3. With children, there should be no compromise when it comes to safety. You believe that to be a responsible day caregiver, you must be certified in First Aid CPR, just in case of any accidents, as well as in Safe Food Handling Practices.
  4. Children develop an attachment to their caregivers and constant changes can unsettle them. You should therefore be truly committed to the profession of being a day caregiver.
  5. You further demonstrate your commitment to the childcare profession by constantly seeking to upgrade your knowledge in childcare and early childhood.
  6. You must be prepared for long hours as a typical daycare usually operates from 7.30am till around 5.30pm.
  7. You are empathetic and flexible. You understand that last minute requests to extend beyond your operating hours are inevitable as sometimes the parents might need to work late.
  8. You are sociable and are able to get along with children and parents of diverse backgrounds.
  9. You understand children and are sensitive to their needs. Children can get frustrated easily as they are not yet able to verbalize their feelings effectively. The day caregiver should be experienced and sensitive enough to pick up cues on their moods and feelings.
  10. You have to be nurturing. You must genuinely care for their well-being and development and work towards building their independence and self esteem.
  11. You must be fun loving and creative as you will need to organize fun activities to help in the physical, emotional, intellectual and social growth of the children.
  12. You must possess good business acumen to ensure that your daycare business remains sustainable and/or profitable. You also understand that there will be no paid vacations and medical and dental benefits.
